Lori Susi

Executive Director

lsusi@ie-academy.org

"A child's life is like a piece of paper on which every person leaves a mark." ── Robert A. Heinlein

With this motto at heart, I strive every day to bring a positive outlook, kindness, and a smile to everything I do as the Executive Director of the Intensive Education Academy (IEA). I firmly believe that these simple gestures can make all the difference, especially in a world where they can often be overlooked. At IEA, we are dedicated to positively impacting the world, particularly for our students, who are at the center of everything we do.

I bring over 30 years of experience in education to my role, along with a deep passion for coaching youth sports. Having coached at various levels, from middle school to college, I have witnessed firsthand how sports can build character and forge strong friendships. My own experience as a Division II basketball player at Southern Connecticut State University has taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, teamwork, and leadership.

My educational journey has seen me teach at both the elementary and middle school levels, where I worked tirelessly to understand and meet the diverse needs of students. Additionally, I have served as an adjunct professor at Southern Connecticut State University and as an Assistant Director at the University of Connecticut for the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD).

However, perhaps my most profound learnings have come from my own children as they navigate their educational journeys. Through their diverse interests in sports, theater, music, and beyond, I have gained valuable insights into how children uncover passions and build confidence, social connections, and a sense of belonging.

At IEA, we are proud to uphold a legacy of love and support, where every student is encouraged to reach their full potential. We strive to create an environment that fosters confidence, resilience, and a love for learning, equipping our students with the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.

When collaborating with families, we express our sincere gratitude for allowing us to accompany them on their child's educational journey. Together, we aspire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of your children, who are also our students. By working together, we have the opportunity to leave indelible positive marks on the pages of their lives, thus contributing to a brighter future for all.

Arun Ranganathan

High School Teacher

  • Teaching was something other people saw in me that I didn't really see in myself. In 2003 I was running a record store, volunteering at local youth music programs and earning money at night as a DJ. To earn extra money, a friend got me a job as a paraprofessional in Willimantic. I began to appreciate and value this field and my career in education began. After graduating from SCSU with my BS in Special Education, I left my paraeducator job in New Haven and began to teach in Meriden. Eventually, I completed my Masters degree in Multiple Intelligence theory and this is what my philosophy of education is based on. Every student has a special gift, something they were meant to share with the world, earn a living, go far and if it's done right a person can learn to love where they are in life.

  • “If you are going down a road and don’t like what’s in front of you, look behind you and if you still don’t like what you see, get off the road. Create a new path!”
    ── Maya Angelou

I am one of IEA’s two school psychologists. This is my first private school experience. In the past, I have worked in public schools-–in West Hartford, Windsor Locks, Simsbury and Berlin. Being in different settings has given me a tremendous opportunity to gain knowledge, understanding and experience with all age groups and to work with many wise and extraordinary educators as well as many wise parents and students. Each of my experiences has contributed to my understanding of how important it is to work from a ‘strengths-based’ model and to be thoughtful in all of what I choose to do. Across my career, collaboration with teachers and parents has supported my work with students and this is essential to success in the field of school psychology because our work is about the whole child. IEA is particularly special to me and I am happy to be working here because of the people and its mission: To help each student reach their full potential through a nurturing and individualized learning environment. I believe that we all learn from one another. In my free time, I like to swim, read, spend time with my family and friends and travel.
