You don’t have to be a coffee fanatic to have heard about the whipped coffee trend that swept across the internet in early 2020. It didn’t take long for everyone who saw the drool-worthy photos of the drink on Instagram to pick up a package of instant coffee and a whisk and make it for themselves.

Now, we’re bringing whipped coffee back…but with an espresso twist.

THE WORLD OF WHIPPED COFFEE

Allow us to introduce you to whipped coffee, or, as it’s better known in South Korea where it originated, dalgona coffee. This drink rose to popularity on TikTok during the early days of quarantine and stay-at-home orders in 2020, which is why it’s also been dubbed “quarantine coffee.”

This coffee is typically made by whisking (or whipping with an electric mixer) instant coffee powder, granulated sugar, and hot water until the ingredients reach a fluffy, pillow-like consistency. Then, the coffee fluff is poured over hot or cold milk.

If you look up a whipped coffee recipe, it’ll more than likely be made with instant coffee, but good news if you don’t care for instant coffee flavor or you’re one of our espresso-loving Roasty readers: you can make fluffy coffee foam with a shot of the dark, strong coffee.

YOU’LL NEED:

  • 1 tablespoon of espresso
  • 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar
  • 1 cup of milk
  • A whisk, electric whisk, or electric mixer

THE PROCESS:

Step 1:

The first step, of course, is to prepare the espresso. Once that’s done, pour a tablespoon of the strong coffee over the sugar in a small bowl.

Step 2:

Grab a whisk, and begin to whip the mixture until soft peaks form and the dark sugary coffee fades to a lighter shade of brown. It may take a few minutes before you see any results, but don’t lose hope! Just keep whipping, and you’ll have creamy coffee in no time.

Step 3:

Then, pour your milk of choice into a mug or tall glass and use a spoon to add the whipped coffee mixture on top of it. We used whole milk, but you can use your favorite milk alternative, like almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk, if you prefer. Stir until the two are blended well, and you’re ready to enjoy your cloud coffee creation!

ENJOY!

A big part of the creamy coffee’s appeal is its customizability, so once you’ve tried the classic recipe, feel free to experiment! Make the dalgona coffee recipe your own by adding things like a splash of vanilla extract, brown sugar, or cinnamon to the coffee whip for extra notes of flavor, or pour a bit of coffee creamer into your milk. Non-coffee drinkers can hop on the trend, too, and substitute ground coffee for hot cocoa or matcha powder.

Happy Caffeinating!
