Vinayagar Chaturthi also known as Pillayar Chaturthi or Ganesh Chaturthi is one of my most favorite festival from childhood. I love going out with my father to buy the vinayagar made out of clay and the umbrella for vinayagar. Even now this festival is very special for me. I love collecting terracotta vinayagar statues and I add one to my collections every year. Today we will see how to make Vella kozhukattai with kadalai paruppu poornam following this easy recipe.

How to prepare Kolukattai with kadalai paruppu stuffing

Ingredients needed

For the Kadalai paruppu poornam

Bengal gram dal/ kadalai paruppu – 1/2 cup
Grated coconut – 1/4 cup
Jaggery -3/4 cup
Ghee – 1/2 tsp
Cardamom – 1/4 tsp

Preparation

Melt jaggery in low heat with just 2 tbsp of water.Filter it to remove impurities if any. Keep it aside.

Dry roast kadalai paruppu until it is hot to touch.

Then pressure cook dal with 1/4 cup of water for 3 whistles. Drain the water completely. Grind it with jaggery to a smooth paste. In the end add grated coconut, cardamom powder and grind it just for a second.

Heat a tsp of ghee, add the ground dal +jaggery paste and cook until it leaves the sides of the kadai. Leave it to cool. Our kadalai paruppu poornam/ stuffing is ready. (see pic below)

For the Kozhukattai’s outer cover

Rice flour – Since I get so many queries asking me if store bought rice flour or idiyappam flour can be for making kolukattai, I made this kolukattai with idiyappam flour. Though it was not bad, it was not as good as we prepare it traditionally. So in case, if you do not have time, you can prepare it with idiyappam flour, otherwise I strongly recommend that you prepare rice in a special way as mentioned in my Vella Kozhukattai recipe or Mani kolukattai recipe for best results.

Ingredients needed

Rice flour – 1 cup
Water – 1 1/4 cup
Salt – 1 pinch
Oil – 1 tsp (sesame seed oil preferable)

In a bowl, keep the rice flour ready.

Add 1 tsp oil and a pinch of salt to 1 1/4 cup of water and bring it to rolling boil.

Then pour the boiling water to the rice flour and mix it well with the back of the ladle. When it is warm, grease your hands with oil and knead to a smooth dough. Keep it covered with a damp cloth to prevent it from drying.

Make equal sized balls out of the dough.

Mix 1 tsp oil with 2 tbsp of water and keep it besides you. Now take a ball, shape it into a cup or a small circle, (dip your fingers in the oil +water mix to make shaping easier) keep 2 tsp of kadalai paruppu stuffing and close it bringing all the corners together. Shape it like a modakam as shown in the first picture above.

Place all the prepared modaks or kolukattais in a greased idli mould and steam for 10 minutes or until done. After switching off the flame, let the kolukattai rest for 5 minutes, then remove it from the pan and enjoy. Do not miss my other kozhukattai recipes below-
