It was instructive yesterday to attend, at the Vieille Charité, the first seminar of the new Research Laboratory created in Marseille, CeRCLEs (Centre de recherche sur les circulations, les liens et les échanges - Centre for Research on Circulation, Links and Exchanges). There I presented my EHESS-funded project to reconstruct the sources and potential of a transformative paradigm and understanding of democratic modernity. The CeRCLEs laboratory aims to be "a place for methodological and epistemological experimentation through collective surveys and seminars to reflect on the work in progress, built around issues of circulation that are both empirical and conceptual" (https://lnkd.in/d6n8H9eQ).

This is an amazing study which speaks to the often overlooked importance of Teaching Award applications and HEA Fellowship applications. The reflective act necessary in writing these applications, then transforms one’s teaching to then impact and shape the student learning experience. I myself have written these award applications since 2018 and it has provided me with the space to reflect upon my teaching and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning to improve my teaching and not just a tick a box. I have also supported tutors in their applications/awards as a professional development tool and reflection of their teaching. It is important for all educators to see the merit and impact of these applications on the student learning experience and not just as an ‘individual award’. #highereducation #sotl #learning #transformativeeducation #teachingexcellence #studentsuccess #studentexperience #reflectivepractice

The Leibniz PhD Network published a survey on 829 PhD candidates. Of course, we looked into our favourite topic: mental health! In the graphical summary here, you see that if PhD candidates are working more than 50h/week, 32% show moderate to severe depression 🫠And more than half of the participants work more than 40h/week, while only 20% took their complete 26-30 vacation days.In the report you find that of all participants 45-49% reported mild to high depressive and anxiety symptoms 🤯 Unfortunately, they did not check for burnout. These results fit to other publications. What’s really bad:60% are not aware of any mental health resources. We know most institutes and universities offer at some kind of counselling nowadays, but apparently they do not spread the word.Preventive measures, like our course system, are very rarely offered. We often get told: there is no budget for that😖 yet we clearly see it’s very much needed!Let’s change this:Ask what kind of mental health resources your institutes or universities offer. Ask for more awareness and more preventive measures!

Honoured to become the new chair of the NWO (Dutch Research Council) Permanent Committee for Large-Scale Research Infrastructure.https://lnkd.in/ev6UMkvkAbout the PC-GWI: From telescopes and MRI scanners to large-scale digitized collections and biobanks, science and research cannot do without the right scientific infrastructure. Facilities contribute to solving major scientific issues and to strengthening the international position of the Netherlands as a country of knowledge. That is why it is important not to make investments ad hoc, but to develop a long-term strategy. This was the reason why the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science established the Permanent Committee on Large-scale Scientific Infrastructure (PC-GWI) in 2015. Since then, the committee has twice published a National Roadmap GWI setting priorities for investment in those large-scale research facilities and has funded 26 ten year projects that contribute to the realization of a sustainable ecosystem of large-scale scientific infrastructures.#researchfacilities #infrastructure #research #roadmap
