With a presence that effortlessly commands attention, Gayatri Bhardwaj has quickly carved a name for herself in the entertainment industry. From her stunning performances on screen to her innate elegance, she has captivated audiences with her versatility and evolving craft.
In just three years, Gayatri has embraced roles that push her boundaries and reveal new dimensions of her acting prowess. Her latest venture, Mohrey, marks a thrilling shift as she takes on a darker, more mysterious character—showcasing yet another side of her talent. In an exclusive conversation, Gayatri shares insights into this new project, how it shapes her career, and the exciting challenges she's embraced since her acting debut in 2021.
What drew you to Mohrey? Could you share a bit about your role?
The first and most important thing for me was the star cast. It included Jaaved Sir, Neeraj Kabi Sir, and Aashim, and having such talented actors adds immense credibility to any project. I was really excited to work with them. I auditioned for the role—it wasn't something that just happened. When I learned about the prominent names involved and the character I would be playing, I was thrilled. This role is completely different from anything I've done before. Previously, I'd typically played the girl next door who falls in love, which has been a recurring theme for me. This time, I'm portraying a lawyer in a serious role, and the show has a darker tone with an element of mystery. It's the kind of content I genuinely enjoy watching, so being part of it is incredibly exciting.
What was your family and friends' reaction to the show?
They haven't watched it yet. I told my mom yesterday, 'Mummy, you know my show is releasing tomorrow, right?' She said, 'Oh, okay.' I asked if she'd seen the trailer, and she said, 'No, I'll just watch it.' At this point, my parents are very used to my projects coming out, so they don't have the same level of excitement as they used to. But I know they'll be thrilled to see it because this is actually the kind of genre we enjoy watching as a family. Personally, I don't watch a lot of rom-coms. I'm more into mystery and psychological thrillers, so this project is right up my alley. A lot of my friends are also excited about it for the same reason!"
You started your acting journey in 2021 and have been part of several series and movies. How do you feel your acting style or approach has evolved since then?
I wouldn't say I follow a specific method or acting style. For me, the most important thing is understanding and maintaining clear communication with my director to grasp what they're looking for in my performance. It's also crucial to have a bird's-eye view of the entire script to understand where my character fits into the story. In an ensemble cast, it's not just about you. You can't always predict how long the director will need a particular scene to play out. For example, a moment that feels significant in your mind might not carry the same weight in the final cut. That's why understanding your role within the broader narrative is so important to me. This realization and awareness came to me only recently while working on this show. Before that, I didn't fully grasp these nuances, but with experience, you start to understand and appreciate these aspects of the craft.
What has been the most rewarding feedback you've received from your fans about your performances?
There have been so many memorable moments. I never imagined I'd be stopped at airports with people saying, 'Oh, you're so believable as your character.' It's incredible. What really touches me is when people gather the courage to approach me. Personally, I know how hesitant I'd be to go up to someone—it takes a lot to overcome your own inhibitions. So, when someone takes that step to approach me, it feels like such a huge compliment. It shows they see me as someone important in their lives, someone worth starting a conversation with, taking photos, or simply connecting with. Those in-person interactions with fans are truly the best part of what I do.
Among the roles you've played so far, which one has been the most fulfilling?
The most fulfilling role for me as an actor has been my last show, Highway Love, where I played Inaaya. I feel like I gave it my all—completely. It was a role that offered me so much freedom. But in Mohrey, the style of acting and the zone it put me in were entirely new to me. I think I'm still discovering myself as an actor. I haven't seen the show yet, so I'm not sure how it's turned out, but I know it was a project that pushed me out of my comfort zone in that regard it was incredibly fulfilling. It allowed me to try something so different and unexpected. But if you ask what made my heart full and happy, it would be Highway Love and it will always hold a special place for that reason.
Is there a genre or role you haven't explored yet but would like to in the future?
A controversial take on this—I would love to play a serial killer someday. It's a role I'm really intrigued by. I'd love to explore a negative character, similar to the kind you see in films like R. Madhavan's character in Shaitaan. He's such a phenomenal actor and an incredible person. Interestingly, I was supposed to debut in a film with him back in 2020, but unfortunately, that project got shelved. It would have been an amazing experience. Hopefully, I'll get to explore such complex characters in the future.
Can you share details about your upcoming projects or dream roles?
I haven't signed anything new yet because, after finishing Mohre, I felt a bit lost. I realized I was repeating roles and patterns I already knew, and it wasn't helping me grow. I didn't want to keep doing the same things. This year has been full of ups and downs, with several personal challenges along the way. I feel like I need some time to reflect and figure out which direction I want to take. I want to create a vision board for the next year, write down my goals, and map out a clear path for myself. Your question has really got me thinking—it's something I'll probably be up all night pondering. Right now, there's no defined route; you have to find your own footing in this industry. But I'm confident that the right project will come along, something I'll audition for and instantly connect with. I'm waiting for that magical moment.
Gayatri's journey from a beauty queen to a versatile actress is a testament to her dedication, resilience, and passion for her craft. As Mohrey premieres today, it marks a new chapter in her career—a chapter where she boldly steps into roles that challenge her and showcase her depth as an actor. The future holds exciting possibilities for Gayatri, and we can't wait to see where her journey takes her next.
